Relic Wines was started by Michael Hirby & Schatzi Throckmorton in 2001 with just a few barrels of Pinot Noir and has since continued to mine history for the old secrets in the making of Rhone varietals, Bordeaux varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They then apply these traditional methods to their California climate and find the resulting wines to be modern and vibrant, yet adamantly more complex and satisfying. Their goal is to make world-class wines that have all of the complexity, aromatics, nuance and concentration that one would expect from some of the best sites in Napa Valley and the Sonoma Coast.
Mike Hirby ‘s career in wine began as a sommelier in Colorado Springs, CO, at the award-winning restaurant Primitivo, where he developed his passion for wine and his palate. Winemaking was the seemingly obvious next step; and after spending several months exploring the wine country of Spain and France, he made his way to Napa Valley. Mike learned his way around the cellar at Behrens & Hitchcock Winery for several years, before being hired as the Winemaker for Realm Cellars in 2002.
Upon graduating from college, where she studied African history, Schatzi Throckmorton moved to the Napa Valley in the fall of 1999 for her ‘gap year’, but after falling in love with wine, gave up her graduate studies and never turned back. She quickly found her way to Behrens & Hitchcock Winery, beginning work there in 2000 along with Mike. At B&H, Schatzi learned the business-side of the wine industry, and in addition to managing Relic, she continues to serve as the General Manager for Behrens Family Winery.
The Dodd-Hinsdale house (circa 1879) was originally built for Mayor William H. Dodd on a lot given to him by his parents in 1871. In 1993, Ted Reynolds and his family obtained an Option to Purchase the property and quickly went about developing a strategy to restore the property to its initial grandeur and set into motion the restoration project to transform the home into a restaurant.
Opened in 1997, Second Empire Restaurant, located in the elegantly restored Dodd-Hinsdale house, combines history, atmosphere, and gourmet cuisine for an unforgettable dining experience.
Their Main Dinner Menu changes every month and features Chef Daniel Schurr’s creations from the freshest seasonal ingredients. This menu is offered on the main floor dining areas and the Tavern.
